What is hydroponics and why is it worth building your own system?
Hydroponics is the future of indoor gardening: plants grow without soil, directly in a nutrient-rich water solution. The result? Faster growth, higher yields, and less space required — perfect for anyone who wants to grow herbs, lettuce, or even vegetables at home.
With a self-built hydroponic system, you save money and learn how the technology works at the same time. And with 3D-printed components from NEXCAPE®, setup becomes even easier.
Step-by-step: Your first hydroponic system
Step 1: Choose the right system
For beginners, we recommend a Deep Water Culture (DWC) System. It's easy to set up, inexpensive, and still delivers impressive results. Essentially, you only need a container, an air pump, and net pots.
Step 2: Prepare the container
Take an opaque container (10–20 liters to start). Drill holes in the lid for the net pots. Tip: With a 3D-printed lid insert, the pots will fit perfectly, and you won't have to improvise.
Step 3: Set up aeration
A small aquarium air pump with an air stone supplies the roots with oxygen. This is the key to healthy, fast-growing plants. The pump runs 24/7 — power consumption is minimal.
Step 4: Mix the nutrient solution
Hydroponic nutrients are available as a concentrate. Mix them with water according to the instructions and pay attention to the pH value (ideal: 5.5–6.5). A simple pH meter is perfectly sufficient to start with.
Step 5: Plant your seedlings
Place your seedlings in net pots with clay pebbles as a substrate. The roots will grow through the pot into the nutrient solution. You will see the first root growth after just a few days.

Frequently Asked Questions About Getting Started with Hydroponics
What can I grow with hydroponics?
Virtually anything: herbs (basil, mint, parsley), lettuces, tomatoes, peppers, strawberries, and much more. For beginners, herbs and lettuce are best suited.
How much does a hydroponic system cost?
A simple DWC system can be built for under 30 euros. Running costs are limited to nutrient solution and electricity for the air pump — just a few euros per month.
Do I need special lighting?
Natural light at a window is often sufficient. For darker locations, LED grow lights are recommended. A timer ensures the ideal light-dark rhythm (16/8 hours).
