For your solar cable to run cleanly and protected from the roof into the house, the roof tile needs to be adapted at one point. Here we show you how to do this safely – without damaging the roof and without removing the MC4 connectors.
What you need
- Angle grinder with diamond cutting disc for stone/ceramic – or a multi-tool with a stone attachment
- Dust mask, safety glasses, gloves
- Pen for marking
- Your NEXCAPE PV roof penetration in the appropriate size
Step by step
- Select & remove tile: Remove the tile at the point where the cable is to pass through the roof – ideally where there is enough space underneath.
- Mark cutout: Place the penetration on the tile and mark the necessary cutout. It's better to mark it a little small – you can always rework it.
- Dry grind: Grind out the cutout with the angle grinder. Work in several shallow passes, without pressure – this way the tile won't crack. Put on your dust mask!
- Test fit: Insert the penetration and check if it sits flush. Rework carefully if necessary.
- Insert cable: Lay the solar cable into the penetration via the lateral guide slots – the pre-assembled MC4 connectors remain attached.
- Hook in & replace tile: Hook the penetration with the cable into the tile and place the tile back into the roof. Done.
What to consider
- Abrasion protection instead of a provisional solution: The penetration ensures that the cable does not rub against the sharp tile edge – this is its actual purpose (it is not a sealing element; the roof sealing is done by the roofing).
- Cut dry, work slowly: Diamond disc + shallow passes = clean cut without cracks.
- Choose the correct size in advance: 125 mm for the Frankfurter Pfanne, 150 mm universal – this way you have to cut out less.
- Safety on the roof: Only in dry weather, with fall protection. If in doubt, let the roofer do it.
