Solarkabel auf dem Dach: Warum die Isolierung altert – und wie du sie schützt - NEXCAPE

Solar Cables on the Roof: Why Insulation Ages – and How to Protect It

Why Solar Cables on the Roof Deteriorate

Your solar cables are exposed outdoors for years – summer heat, frost, sun, wind. The modules and connectors are designed for this. The weak point is often where the cable enters the house from the roof. This is precisely where it is decided whether the insulation will last a long time.

Enemy 1: UV Radiation and Heat

Constant sun exposure makes cheap plastics brittle. Solar cables themselves are usually UV-resistant – but accessories and DIY solutions made of normal plastic often are not and crumble after a few summers. Make sure that everything permanently exposed to the sun is UV and weather-resistant.

Enemy 2: Abrasion on the Tile Edge

The most common and underestimated damage: If the cable is simply routed over the tile edge or through a roughly cut hole, it rests on a hard, often sharp clay edge. Every small movement acts like a file. Over the years, the insulation wears through – in the worst case, down to the bare conductor.

How to prevent abrasion

This is where a PV roof lead-through as abrasion protection comes in: The cable is guided cleanly through the tile and no longer rests on the sharp edge. Our lead-through is 3D-printed from TPU (UV and weather-resistant, Made in Germany) – tool-free, without drilling, and without having to disassemble the pre-assembled MC4 connectors.

Enemy 3: Movement due to Wind

Wind causes loose cables to constantly swing. Without proper routing, this increases abrasion exactly at the contact edge. A fixed, defined lead-through eliminates this movement of the cable at the critical point – it is guided instead of swinging freely.

Conclusion: Short Checklist

To ensure the insulation lasts a long time: Choose UV and weather-resistant accessories, never let the cable run over a sharp tile edge, and ensure a clean, abrasion-protected lead-through through the tile. This will save you expensive troubleshooting on the roof later.
